Because they don't get anything out of it except loss of time and reputation. Even if it's proven that it wasn't malpractice, everyone still believes that there might be something to it.

Their reputation is tarnished regardless of whether they did anything wrong or not.

It's a huge waste of their time, which is worth a lot to them. Also, it does not make them look good.

Basically, it means that their reputation is damaged by being accused of malpractice. Like if you were to go to court for a crime you didn't do and won the case, all of your future employers would still know you were arrested.

Even if a Dr does win the case, when you look up his/her record when checking them out it will show that there was once a Med-Mal suit against them - if you look a little harder into this you can find out if the Dr won or lost the case but it is there for the public to see, none the less. When searching for a Dr this will cast doubt on people's minds regarding this Dr so they potentially lose money as the patient will go to the next Dr on the list without checking to see what happened or even if they do check into it, you only get the basic facts of the case - what it was filed for, what date, dismissed or settled. You probably don't want a Dr with this on their record as you would always have a little doubt about them. It is a matter of reputation and with so many people today looking for their "lottery" in life it is a sad situation for many good Drs when a person does this to them without first finding out the facts of their illnes, disease or surgical warnings.
