You may not need one, but it would be much better to have one. Asking for compensation is not that simple- there is a lot of layers to get to the settlement stage, e.g. filing complaint, depositions, negotiations, mediation, settlement conferences, etc. Attorneys earn their money in these cases on a "contingency basis" if they accept your case, they will front the money to pursue the case in exchange for a chunk (25-40% usually- depends on if it goes to court or settles early).

It's hard to believe you would be successful w/o the help of a lawyer. You can be assured that the other side will have them. You might have some success in getting a reduction in your hospital bill by lodging a complaint with patient relations, & you would not need a laywer for that. But a malpractice suit? I think you will need to be represented.

Even if it is a clear case of medical medical practice, a doctor has a clause in their insurance that says they can state no contest which pretty much means that they will not settle and you would have to go to court if you wish to pursue a lawsuit. Most doctors due not want to settle because it causes their insurance premiums to go up and it goes on their records forever. So, yes, lawyer up.
