Just settled a personal injury case, and part of the settlement will be used to pay medical bills. My lawyer said his office will send the payment. Is this common and can I pay the bills myself?

Pointing at you!
Yes, very common. If he is going to do it, why would you want to bother with it.

If the medical providers filed liens in your case, your attorney MUST pay those off before you get any of the cash.

Yes, they will send payment, not you. One thing that you seem to miss here though is that your lawyer will be sending payment out of YOUR money. If you won the money, it's yours and the lawyer will take a portion as his fee. The bills that he is paying are coming from your portion of those winnings, not his fees.

Yes this will be takes out of your cash settlement.
If you require cash to pay other expenses while you are waiting on your lawsuit to settle you can apply for a pre settlement loan from a lawsuit funding company.
