It depends on the law in your state/province/country.

It depends where you are, but you are compensated for the injury (not the way it happened) and for the consequential losses.
If - as a result of the hospitals negligence- you have lost a high powered job paying 100k a year, and will never work again, your compensation will be huge.
If you were off work for six months and the side affects don't stop you working, the compensation will be modest.
Compensation for the actual injury (in the UK at least) is very modest indeed - the value of the claim is in the consequential losses and your question has no detail on this at all.

It depends on what the court thinks is an appropriate amount for the loss of earnings/damage caused. If you didn't lose your job or anything, then that's not much, I'm afraid.

I don't know England's law on this, so I will relate what we do and how we file. First, it will be hard proving your case, at least it is here. A suit, causes the lawyers to make the most money.
We have what is called pain and suffering which is exactly what you need to look into.
Also you might generate the wages you would have made during your working years to come.
This might give you a ball park number of lost wages. Did you file a wrongful act on the hospital also? I would if I were you would do my homework and shop for the best suited lawyer to represent you in court. I am sorry to say compensation never covers your loss entirely. Good Luck and God Bless You.
