Practically nothing.
Med mal is just the title of a cause of action for a medical practitioner's negligent performance of his duties (although, technically, med mal could probably include reckless or intentional acts done in the course of a medical practitioner's duties). Negligence is the generic name for a tort where a person has a duty to another person, breaches that duty, which is the cause in fact and proximate cause of damages. In Med mal cases, the doctor has the duty to act as a reasonable doctor (or specialist, if necessary) would act.

They are basically the same thing. If a doctor is found to be negligent he has neglected to do something he should have. It is basically careless. Maybe he should have suggested a test and didn't. Like when you forget to clean the candy wrapper out from under your bed and now your room is full of bugs. When a doctor accused of malpractice it means he did or didn't do something he should have or shouldn't have done, but it tends to be a bit more proactive. He gives someone an antibiotic that they are allergic to and it was in the chart. He puts a cast on to tight. Maybe he doesn't do an xray to find out about a head injury that later causes complications for the patient. It is also careless or thoughtless. Doctors have a great deal of responsibility and do not have the right to be careless or thoughtless like the rest of us. If your uncle likes my answer let me know and I'll send you my address so you can forward the 20 bucks.

Simple terms ... Elizabeth - if you went to the hospital emergency room ... and you had ... say an appendix errupting - so - they rush you to the operating room ... you wake up the next morning and discover you need to use the bathroom a little differently now - BECAUSE YOU ARE NOW A MAN ... that would be MALPRACTICE ...
Now say you went to the hospital for the same reason ... appendix errupting ... and they never took you to the operating room, just left you in the hall on a gurney - and you DIED ... that would be NEGLIGENCE - why? They neglected to treat you knowing the risks.
Hope this cleared up the mud a little for ya.

Med mal is a subset of negligence in tort law. However, many states require special procedural rules, expert testimony, and burdens of proof in med mal cases - flowing from tort reform and "frivolous lawsuits".
