One of the main reasons in my opinions the reasons healthcare costs are rising is the abuse of Malpractice lawsuits. In Cuba, if a doctor messes up, its oh well get over it(I dont think Mike Moore mentions that). In Canada, and Britain they have laws limiting the amount of damages and is very hard to prove. But here in the USA its sue for millions. Doctors and Insurance companies pay millions for settlements, which someone has to pay for. If the government takes over will they end up paying money out to settle? And while I am on the topic who honestly believes are government is capable of managing a universal healthcare system for over 300 million people? Canada can get away with it, mainly becuase they have a fraction of the population of the USA. Are my points valid? Or am I completely wrong? Thanks.

You can't sue the government in most cases now. My guess is you'd be out of luck.

I want to know who is going to pay for universal healthcare i mean i dont want it and im not paying for someone elses lifestyle. and NO one should dictate another persons life in any way. unless they break the law but i do want it..
and its a great question. my answer would be 'americans working class will pay for it"

It sounds like you might work in the health care system. Doctors are over paid. They'll get over it I'm sure.
Hi A
oh well.

You ask a good question. I don't know how any of the proposed plans address the issue of malpractice suits. It's interesting that Canada and Britain limit damages. I'm wondering if, by including such a proviso in the US universal health care plan, we can get the AMA's support.
I don't see the size of the U.S. population as a deal-breaker. All sorts of programs are administered on a national scale. Medicare, Social Security, the National Parks, and the FBI, for example. None of these are perfect, but they do the job.

It will most likely be like VA and military healthcare and hospitals--you just take your lumps and go on with life with no option to sue if things go wrong. If they screw up, too bad... maybe if you keep going back another doctor will catch on eventually unless it's something like cancer that can't wait.
Currently, we do have the option (for military) to go outside the system and seek private care which is much better... but I don't know how that would work if we did end up with true "National Healthcare". I find the concept very scary.
It is not just malpractice suits (and insurance) that cause high costs in health care, it's also all the "middle-men" involved in health management, billing etc. It's worth reading up on.

Part of the problem with healthcare is the incredible amount of money people can make suing docs and hospitals.
Hopefully, there would be a mediation committee that would care for the persons needs if they were harmed by a specific doc or hospital but wouldn't give the millions in punative damages that they do now. Those all go back into raising the costs of healthcare.
