A primary care physician who treats diabetics CAN give an insuline shot but usually just writes a prescription that is filled at some 3rd party pharmacy. Either way, the doctor gets paid essentially for that visit and the quality of their decision. If they make the WRONG decision, they can lose their license or get SUED! Malpractice law suits (especially defending against false claims) is the REAL health care problem. We have emergency rooms. The government probably pays for people who aren't even citizens ( yes, we are compassionate in America ). These are the real costs. Now if a doctor is going to decide to amputate a foot. The doctor that makes that decision does NOT do the surgery, a surgeon does it. So a different doctor gets paid for that. and its NOT more than $ 1000 tops.. some do these cheap if you pay cash and really need it. Either way, what is the incentive to amputate??? There is NONE! Diabetics already NEED to see their doctor on an on-going basis.

Further, there are a LOT of PRIVATE companies doing research with bacteria that can be genetically engineered to produce insuline. There are PRIVATE companies paying to do research to use adult stem-cells that can be injected into the human pancreas to stimulate insuline production. EVERY diabetic is a unique individual with unique treatments. NONE of which favor amputation. Amputation is a VERY ugly thing and can EASILY cause a lawsuit!!!!!! Doctors DO NOT want to be tied up in court.

Sure they would.*

Actually, yes. I don't remember what the disorder is called, but I know that there are some people who have a mental disorder that prompts them to have amputations they don't need. Someone had to do the unnecessary amputations for them, and I'm assuming that the surgeons who did them charged a fee.

No what would colleagues say and the Doc wouldn't get recommendations

Yes its called "fear mongering", we all know its BS based on some probably oddball case that had 20 other reasons for it happening. Both sides like to tell 1/2 truths so they can gain support for their ideas.

Please list the doctors that are foregoing insulin for amputating feet. Until I see the list I'll call those who claim its happening liars. That includes the president. If it so common it should be EASY to provide a few doctors that do it, I would think their families would be glad to expose these ppl...if only they existed.

I don't know. I have seen the prescriptions doctors write for money.

My mom's been a nurse since the late 1950's. She never thought doctors would be doing abortions for money.

No, but his opinion might be biased due to financial considerations. Surgeons are only human, like the rest of us.

The American College of Surgeons put out a rebuke of Obama for his comments regarding surgeons. Linked here, if you're interested: http://www.facs.org/news/obama081209.html

Do you really think a Doctor would give michael jackson excess plastic surgery just for money?

We have 'tort reform' in California. It had no impact on medical pricing. All it did was insulate medical practitioners from being held accountable for careless and reckless practices. Malpractice insurance rates did not go down. Tort reform does nothing but screw over the victims of these practices a second time. Medical practitioners have no incentive to use best practices.

Only 4% of the latest medical innovations have come from government programs. The remainder have all come from the private sector. Profit drives innovation.
