I heard on the news this morning that President Obama is going to address the AMA regarding universal healthcare. One of the things he is going to propose is limiting the payouts on medical malpractice lawsuits.

Is this basically a bribe to the AMA? The AMA have been pushing this for years but the democrats and the trial lawyers have been resisting this.

So are Obama and the democrats turning their backs on the lawyers now? How does Democrat John Edwards feel about this?

Yutsnark - The AMA is going to resist Univeral Healthcare Reform. Several articles were printed about it. Here is one:

Sassyone - Why all of a sudden due democrats support tort reform for malpractice? Shouldn't that have been done 20 years ago when it was proposed?

Forget War Buy More
No, it's part of the badly needed reform.

As a woman I am disheartened to see the vanishing rolls of ob/gyns due to that practice having the highest malpractice insurance rate.

yutsnark
I doubt it. He's already got the AMA's support.

Et cetera
Silly you. The AMA already supports universal health care.

The AMA has been lobbying for this for years. They claim it would be a boon to their practices and reduce costs. If it improves the bottom line and encourages doctors to stay in private practice... I don't consider it a bribe. I consider it a good idea.

Many in the medical field like the idea of single payer because of the large amount of resources they currently devote to paperwork for the various billing systems.

*chuckle*

Perhaps we could call this a "political compromise".

What a lot of people do not know is that even in states where tort reform has passed, malpractice INSURANCE rates have continued to climb and have pushed many doctors to relocate.

JimSock
LOL.....tort reform.....LOL

That's a Republican/Conservative thing!!!!!!

I wonder why the Left is not calling him out on this?

Sassy One
Excuse me, but weren't you Bush people the one whinning about frivolous law suits a while back. Horrible then, okay now?
Healthcare is burying this country. Wake up and quit looking for inch worms when we are being strangled by a huge snake.

Older, successful doctors will retire early, and the best young college students will decide to go into something more lucrative like engineering, instead of medicine.

This is the decline of American medicine.

I don't know if you'd call it a bribe, but any health care reform bill would have to have tort reform in it. It would be dead on arrival otherwise.

slc_corrado
Wasn't there a recent article describing the majority of doctors wanted universal health care? If that were true why the townhall meetings with doctors and the AMA. Do they know something the Obamabots don't?
