I would love to apply to medical school, but I am afraid that it may be a waste of my time. The first few years of school were not my best. I got an F and a D in courses and dropped a few other courses that I could not excell in. I later learned that dropping those courses may have been a bad move on my part. Are thses mistakes I have made along the way going to prevent me from getting accepted?

Can`t you re-sit the F and D courses...they are really poor grades...if you can re-sit I think you know that you are going to have to put more effort in...If you cant resit and cant be accepted (which looks likely) then settle with the grades you have and look to a career where they will be acceptable...don't be a defeatist there is always another option.

They might be a problem.

But if they were all early on and you did really well later, then you might be able to get past that. Make sure that you address this in your essays. Explain what happened and that you overcame it. Don't go into great details -- say something like "Family problems" or "death in the family" or even "I was not ready for school" -- then tell them how you turned it around.

I once knew someone who took a year off in the middle of college. When she applied to medical schools, she got an interview at one school. In the middle of the interview, the Dr asked her (somewhat derisively) "I see that you took a year off from school -- was that to find yourself?" Her response "Yes -- but at least I didn't go to California to do it." This got a laugh & she was accepted.
