One of the best resources for finding court records, including medical malpractice cases, is through VersusLaw. VersusLaw is an online library that provides access to court decisions, state and federal statues, along with codes and regulations.
To obtain this legal program you would log on to www.versuslaw.com. VersusLaw offers three plans at very reasonable monthly fees and disclosed is their description of each plan: Standard Plan-.95 per month, VersusLaw's basic legal research plan contains federal and state appellate case law opinions; Premium Plan-.95 per month, VersusLaw's Premium legal research offers access to Standard Plan case law as well as selected state source materials, and increased search engine capabilities including a citation search feature. Now includes Federal District Court opinions back to 1950; and Professional Plan-.95 per month, VersusLaw's Professional legal research plan provides you with all the essentials of the Premium Plan, access to additional federal specialty practice courts, and current versions of the U.S. Code and Code of Federal Regulations. Now includes Federal District Court opinions back to 1950.
The first step to using VersusLaw will be to select a library to review which will include: all Federal Courts, U.S. Supreme Court, and Federal District Courts to name a few. After making your library selection, you will enter your search text, (i.e. "medical malpractice"). A search date range will be offered. It is best to go back at least five years to current date when searching. The number of search results to be displayed will be offered; it is best to keep the display at 25. Click submit and VersusLaw will search the selected library. It may take a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the criteria. Upon completion of the search, a list of the cases available for viewing will appear in another window providing jurisdiction, case description, and the date of case. Click the case description to view a court case.
If your company is not in the market for a legal library, log on to www.uscfc.uscourts.gov (United States Court of Federal Claims); "search" for your subject such as medical malpractice (be sure to put the quote marks around the key phrase words), click on the attachment tab, and scroll down to view a variety of court cases relating to your search key phrase. Each case gives a summary, in PDF format, and the name of the plaintiff v. defendant, which also includes the docket number.
