It's illegal to not spy on your child if you think they are doing something illegal. It's also illegal to install spyware on someone else's computer. So if your child buys their own computer through their own job, do parents have the legal right to install spyware, such as a keylogger, on that computer without the child's knowledge/consent?
-responding to Kevin k, legally that's not true if the internet and the electricity are freely given to the child or are understood to be freely given.

As a parent and the one paying for the internet and electricity used, they have every right to control how those things are used. If a child who wants his privacy is stupid enough not to require a password to start his operating system, then all is fair.
Privacy is a trust. You grant it as long as you do not suspect illegal activity or that your child is in danger.
