In Illinois, murder has no statute of limitations and i am sure that is the case in the other 49 states. As for theft, etc. I am not sure.

Is the concept of a statute of limitations really relevant in California? What does happen if you kill somebody, two guest spots on a Rosie O'Donnell talk show and take a sensitivity training class?

You are asking about two different things: the time in which criminal charges must be filed and the time in which a civil suit must be filed. I can give you the right answer only as to the criminal charges.

In general, the statute of limitations in California for misdemeanors (including petty theft) and infractions (including traffic offenses) is one year. In general, the statute of limitations for felonies with a maximum sentence of eight years or more is six years, and for other felonies it is three years. However, for cases involving theft or fraud (including grand theft) it is four years. There is no limitations period for murder or for the embezzlement of public funds. There are some very complicated rules regarding sex offenses, which cannot be simply set out in this forum.

Medical malpractice is not a crime.
