my step farther had a hernia for about 2 years now. it got to the point wear it was so painful that he had to go to the hospital, doctors told him he had to have emergency surgery or else he would die because the hernia was sitting on his intestine which they stated would burst if the hernia wasn't removed immediately. so they surgically removed it but noticed he had a lott of alcohol in his system, because he drank quiet a bit in his life and he loved to drink. which means he must have drank that day or thenighte before his surgery. so doctors decided to detox him right after his surgery, now correct me if im wrong but i thought a person was suppose to recover from asurgeryy before hand. they never gave him a chance to recover from surgery and put him into detoximmediatelyy. and not only that but he should have gone throughtherapyy before any type of detoxification. supposedly as told by the doctors he hadcirrhosiss or the liver and when they detoxed him his body was not able to get rid of the toxins that were trying to be push out of his body because of the supposedcirrhosiss. so to make a long story short, his liver was not able to filter the toxins and he died :'-( honestly this does not seem right to me and if he hadcirrhosiss the doctors should have known that if they took tests to make sure he wasHealthyy enough for the detox. now correct me if im wrong but this isdefiantlyy medical malpractice in my eyes! and they placed death upon a person that would have survived with just surgery. if anyone knows they answers to any of this and feels like this i wrong please feel free to comment with mature answers only. thank you everyone.
***r.i.p step dad/esque/pook*** you will always be missed.
he did not ask to go through dtox, just for the surgery.

Sorry to hear about your step father, but the answer is they would have thought it in his interest to do that.

I am sorry about your stepfather. The answer is yes, you can detox someone with cirrhosis, we do it all the time. Unfortunately alcohol withdrawal, or delirium tremens, can be fatal in its own right, and if the person is unstable medications are given to prevent worsening withdrawal. While I can't comment on the specifics of the case or whether all the treatment was appropriate, we definitely do treat people with withdrawal who have cirrhosis.

I'm a recovered alcoholic myself and now work in a rehab centre, for cirrhosis of the liver to occur your stepfather would have had to have been a very heavy drinker for many years, it doesn't mean that he had a drink recently, he could for instance have stopped months before, the damage was already done.

Liver damage can be reversed in it's early stages but cirrhosis is not reversible, but the relatively healthy part of the liver could have carried on working for many years, which is why the doctors thought it worthwhile going through detoxification, they would not need to wait until he recovered from his surgery because by detoxifying him would make his recovery much quicker not slower, and in no way contributed to his death I promise you.

So please forget about malpractice, the doctors did exactly the right thing, I know you must feel in yourself that someone must pay for your sad loss, but this is not the way, just remember the very happy times you shared together, God bless!

EDIT: The doctor would automatically follow the recommended procedure regarding detox, whether your stepfather asked for it or not, just the same as if he had to give a blood transfusion or any other procedure if it was deemd necessary, once a patient is on the operating table, many decisions may have to be made with the best interests (and the law) of the patient in mind.

What do you think? Answer below!
