We begin a story of determination and strength - a story about a man who has been going the extra mile, while being on dialysis for the past 32 years. Peterborough's Ken Sharp was given the royal treatment as the guest of honour at Fresenius Medical Care Canada. That company manufactures the dialysis equipment which has been keeping Ken Sharp alive. Ken was chosen to receive the Gerd Krick Achievement Award, for outstanding achievement in clinical outcomes and work in advocacy for renal research. John Blake has the details in this segment of The Extra Mile. Peterborough's Ken Sharp is becoming known throughout Canada, and the world, for surviving on dialysis for 32 years. In Part 2, we look behind the scenes at the strong support Ken was able to rely on - from his parents. Employees of Fresenius Medical Care Canada in Richmond Hill were in awe of Peterborough's Ken Sharp when he received his award. The company's equipment has been keeping Ken alive for those 32 years. The idea to honour Ken came from the company's CEO, Ken Lipps, who soon learned where much of Ken's inner strength came from, because the executives and employees know how difficult it is to be on dialysis several times a week for that long a period of time.
