If someone were arrested with an MIP or possession of an illegal drug, is it a safe idea not to get a lawyer and to simply go in and try to make a deal with the prosecutor?

It is never smart to talk to anybody without a lawyer. On the other hand it's never smart to have drugs.

Absolutely not. If you cannot afford an attorney, the court has to appoint one to represent you.

It is a good idea to try and cut your own deal if you are a career criminal with multiple convictions, plea bargains, jury trials, jail setences, prison sentences, probation, and parole. If you have been through all of that then you've learned the system and can probably do as good for yourself as any attorney could do for you.
But if this is your first time up on charges then have an attorney go to bat for you.
