What is the diff. between these two? let say, a minor injuries to passengers in my car would be covered by which policy?
MSAD
Both are injury coverages.
Both pay for passengers in the covered vehicle
Both pay for medical bills up to the policy limit
BI Liability coverage: Coverage limit is usually expressed as a fraction - such as 25/50. This means the most that any one person can collect for their injury (regardless of severity) is 25,000. The most that can be paid for all injuries in 1 accident is 50,000.
BI liability pays for injuries that result from your negligence. In essence - you did something wrong that caused them to be hurt. You can't be liable to yourself. That means, an at fault driver can not collect under this coverage.
This coverage will pay medical bills, lost wages, loss of consortium, pain and suffering.
Medical Payments coverage is usually expressed as a set amount - such as 1000 or 5000 per person. This coverage pays only for medical bills up to the policy limit. This coverage pays regardless of fault. It will also pay if you are a pedestrian and are struck by another vehicle.
Here's an example of how the coverages work - Joe is driving. Sally, Mary and Bob are passengers in his vehicle. Joe loses control of his car and hits a tree. All 4 occupants of the car are injured.
Joe - would be able to make a claim under Medical Payments for his medical bills (up to the policy limit). He can Not make a claim against the bi liability. His negligence caused the accident and he can't be liable to himself. His claim is Med Pay only.
Sally, Mary and Bob would be able to make a claim against the policies Medical Payments coverage And the bi liability coverage.
Hope this helps.

Medical payments is for the people INSIDE your car. Liability is for the people OUTSIDE your car that you hit, or in another car that you hit. On some occasions, your passenger who doesn't live with you, might sue you for injuries if you caused the accident - in which case, your liability should also respond.
