OK, I was hospitalized without health insurance in february, and I was denied Medicaid because the social worker made a mistake on my case and I've basically gotten a "screw you" from Medicaid. I have an attorney now and he's working to A.) Get medicaid to cover the bill or B.) Negotiate down the bill from $ 30,000 to something reasonable. There's also option C.) to fill for bankruptcy. Are there any other options for me? Any charities to help people who get sick without health insurance? Anything else? Help!

Your attorney should be able to negotiate the bill, because im sure you dont have 30,000 dollars just sitting in the bank to pay it. the hospital will usually take whatever they can in these situations, because something is better then nothing in their eyes. My question is can you pay what is offered? if you cant then bankruptcy is your best option.

Gotta love government health care, huh?

But YOU can negotiate that hospital bill yourself, before it goes to collections, WITHOUT paying an attorney - you just have to ask them to reprice it to a cash price, then ask if they have any charity fund or financial aid. Once it goes to collections, it's too late.

Once you've negotiated the price down, it's time to invoke friends, family, and church family to help you pay for it. The good news is, it should negotiate down to about $ 8,000, roughly, maybe a tad more. You can pay it off in under a year, with an extra part time job.

As a general rule, the attorney should be able to negotiate the cost by 1/3, but that brings it down to $ 20,000, which is not your idea of negotiation.

You better hope he can get medicaid to cover, or bankruptcy maybe your only other option, and then you maybe on a chapter 13, which means you will still be paying this from 5 to 7 years which is a repayment option.

Depending on your option and where you were treated, if this hospital takes charity cases and you qualify, then they must treat you as a charity since they could lose their tax status.

But regardless, you have a lawyer who should be earning his fee and no one out here knows all the info that your lawyer has to decide if you have any recourse or, sorry to say nothing. Unfortunately, people become sick with hundreds of thousands of bills or treatment needed and have to have fundraisers or you can don'tif you dont have insurance or have the money to get treatment.

talk to your lawyer.
