The question is:
Examine the basic doctrines that are necessary for a case to be brought in the tort of negligence. In particular cite appropriate authority which you feel is relevant.
But I really don't understand what he wants me to write. Any ideas?
I'm not a law student as such, I'm doing Building Surveying. I just need a basic understanding of law as basically a lot of Surveyors get sued!
The first bit is getting me the most. 'basic doctrines that are necessary ' I know once I start I will be fine, I just need a hand getting going!

Yup, loads but as this is an essay question you should not be trying to cheat, and should instead be answering it yourself.
Also, if you don't get what he's asking from that question, how much do you understand about contracts, torts, and negligence?

first, identify the basic principles on tort negligence. I am sure that was covered in class.
Next, get case citations that pertain to the situation.
Last, write essay.
OR, you could seek out some after-class extra help.

You can read (buy book on Tort and Damages/or go law library) to see those negligence that may be charged upon you as Building Surveyor )
1. you may be liable on your approval of safety entrance or fire exits if not conform to law
2. you may be liable on the durability of the materials used in the building.
3. On the proper location of the building, whether it is in risk side of the area;
4. the duration of the building.
to name a few.
