I am having trouble securing days off work to take kids to required appointments.
My kids have special needs and have more than average number of appointments.
How do other single parents of "special needs" kids manage work and not neglect medical needs of children? I don't want to lose my job for calling in after they wouldn't approve time off. I don't want to be a sponge on the state. I don't want to lose my kids for medical neglect. How do I balance this all?
Do we have a legal right to days off for medical purposes?

Families and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) would help you. Google it...

Not really. Employers have 'policies' that prohibit excessive absences from work, and legally they can and will fall back on the "schedule your appointments around your work" excuse.
Sadly though this is the cause of some people who end up on welfare, try talking to someone whom you trust in your family to help you. Get a letter from the hospital/doctor for them and you to sign stateing they have a right to take your children to the doc for treatment etc.
GOOD LUCK ON THIS I HOPE ALL WORKS OUT!!

FMLA...you don't get paid for the time off though usually unless you have vacation time owed to you.
Otherwise you would have to use your sick days that you have for yourself for your kids.
Good luck and I hope your children get to feeling better!!

I'm having the same problem here at my job, but I dont qualify for state aid. its really hard for me to balance everything out. I have been setting up appointments on saturdays because i work 9-6 everyday. I have my husband to help but still his job gives him a hard time too about taking the kids to the doc's. You can look into the family medical leave act, but that only covers short-term leaves from work, not exactly days off. I would say have a talk with your human resource person and let them know you circumstance. Bring in any medical documentation you have on your children just to show them that you are serious and that your children need to be attended to regularly. Be strong and hang in there, it'll get easier with time :)

call your HR and tell them you want FMLA (family medical leave act) you can take it for up to 12 weeks or so many hours unpaid. I used it for when my son was in the hospital for three weeks and now each time he has to go to a doctor visit for the same condition my work has to allow me to leave.
As long as you are full time and not a small small company they should have to give it to you. just have his dr complete the forms.. Hope this helps.. God Bless..
