I fell down some icy stairs about an hour ago. I am ok, but I want to know the best treatment to apply now , so tomorrow I won't be so sore. Should I take a hot soak or apply ice?

If you damaged any deep tissue by bruising it(something deeper than scratches on the surface) I've always found that a warm shower or a heating blanket works better for me. If its a scratch and you are worried about inflammation in the shallow skin, use some ice. In all likelihood you are still going to be a little sore tomorrow.

Ice for now, in a day or 2 go for the heat. Ice reduces swelling and inflamation, heat increases blood flow and promotes healing. Good Luck!

Apply ice for the first 24-48 hours after that you can use heat for discomfort but ice will decrease swelling.....feel better!

I can't tell from your question what part of your body you injured, or how badly. I am going to assume it's a soft tissue injury without any joint or bone involvement. If these elements are involved, I would see a doctor to make sure nothing is permanently damaged. Even if you do need to see a doctor, you can still follow the advice below until you are able to see him/her.

Apply ice. Keep it on for 10 minutes, take it off, then back on for 10 minutes, etc. This should reduce the amount of swelling that may occur. If you are not allergic to ibuprophin (Motrin), I would also take Motrin (as directed on the bottle) which will reduce the pain and swelling. The discomfort usually peaks between 24 - 48 hours, then resides. If you are not feeling improvement on day 3, go see your doctor.

Good luck and you may want to apply something to the stairs, too. (I'm sure you have already thought of that!) Hope you feel better soon.

What do you think? Answer below!
