I am applying to a fire department and they said they do a medical background check. I was in a car accident many years ago and am still going through a lawsuit due to that accident for back pain. Could that prevent someone from getting hired? Thanks.

I myself am not a firefighter, but my dad is. He actually has a bad back - not due to an accident. I think when they talk about medical checks, it's more like making sure your vitals all check out - ie. checking to make sure you don't a serious heart condition that could prevent you from doing the job.

Firefighters have to carry very heavy equipment. As long as you're able to lift and carry it and perform all other duties, you'd shouldn't have a problem.

One thing though - if you were to get hired and ended up throwing out your back, you couldn't get any kind of compensation from the department because it's an existing injury/condition.

Asthma, heart problems, are a couple of big ones. Alot of it depends on the department.

What do you think? Answer below!
