My uncle recently came home from the hospital for a small procedure. He tends to be very diligent in paying his bills on time and doesn't spend time going through them with a fine tooth comb. That changed when his wife saw the bill and was outraged. The fees were astronomical so she did some internet searching and found a professional who audited his hospital bill. Turns out the hospital made a mistake and charged him for 4 nights instead of the 1 night he was there! The bill specialist saved them around $ 4,500. I am in the health & wellness industry and thought I could share my family's experience in hopes it may help or prevent someone from having to deal with overcharges, mistakes, etc on their medical bills. The medical bill auditor that helped my uncle was from www.GorillaBill.com

This is a common practice I am afraid... to bilk unsuspecting public out of as much of their hard earned money as possible. Maybe they won't care and their insurance will pay... a victimless crime? I don't think so. I would approach it as if it was an innocent error and ask for it to be corrected.

I just got a bill from Kaiser Pemanente for $ 634 (and I had their insurance). They claimed that when I switched to Blue Cross they gave me service during the gap. They sent me a bill that had all kinds of lab work and doctors and stuff that had nothing to do with the "step test throat culture" my 14 year old went into get. The itemized list was in numerical codes and such to obfuscate the truth but from what I could see it was a phoney bill. I fought it and I won. That is that... Blue Cross would have probably paid it blindly but not fair... very crooked in my mind.

Almost half the time, I end up going back and "fixing" things that were billed wrong, or paid wrong, or wrongly denied, on my family's health insurance claims.

But you don't need to hire some outside agency to do it for you - all it takes is a little time, and access to a telephone, and anyone can do it yourself.
