physician malpractice
by SS&SS

I have always wanted to go to medical school to become a doctor. But, someone recently told me(whose dad is a doctor) that physicians don't make much money at all, because they are paying over $ 100,000 a year for medical malpractice insurance, while they are only earining $ 150,000 a year to begin with. Is this true??

The amount physicians pay for malpractice insurance varies with the doctors specialiaty and can also vary considerably if the doctor has been sued previously.

The percentage is a little high. Here is an article from 2004 detailing some Malpractice myths, but some of those numbers could have changed in the past few years, but it's a reasonable guideline.

Yes, it does depend on the state as well, California which has malpractice caps has a lower overall malpractice insurance rate than Pennsylvania with out caps. This high premium is why many OB-GYNs have left many states (they have a very high malpractice rate). This, plus law suits, and the fact that many patients are uninsured, and poor medicare reimbursement are other reasons why MDs don't make very much (the goldern era is long gone)
