My dad died in December in a nursing home. He fell and fractured a hip and went into the hospital. It was a battle for 39 days to get him care. Most of the staff just ignored his needs. The autopsy showed only the drinks my family gave him hours before his death. I want to start a petition and gather enough stories and facilities to try and stop the negligence.

Well, I'm sorry for your loss, but good luck with that...it's been an ongoing problem for decades!!
It depends on the facility and the care..they aren't all like that, but far too many are!!

For starters, get a few hundred signatures with addresses (need that for confirmation purposes). Take a copy of it to the police chief (if inside city limits) or sheriff's departmnent if outside city limits. See if anything is going to be done in an investiagion. If you don't get anywhere with that, the governor's office is next. Then, seriously, there is the Dr. Phill show. You could also get the local media involved.

Hi Sylvia:
You have my sympathy but I know that's of little help.
A grass roots campaign is hard to start unless you can get major public support and there is the rub.
Many people today tell you OK but in reality have their own lives to live and don't get fighting mad until it happens to their family.
See if the local papers are interested in a human rights issue and go from there.
Warning: be careful what you say about the nursing home for it may backfire if you claim they did something illegal without proof.
I wish you well.

http://www.petitiononline.com/

is the site where you would go to start
a petition.

Millions of people can have access there.

I am sorry for your loss.

I would suggest that you contact the local investigative news team to look into the abuse & neglect. The reporter will investigate & blast the place on the news.

As a worker in a nursing home I have seen exactly what your talking about and a lot more. Right now Nursing homes are the most regulated industry in the US probably because of such abuses. Yet, it still goes on. You need to look to a lawyer if you have proof of this neglegence, not so that you can get rich, but so that it will put the nursing home in a bind. Personally I will try ANY MEENS NECESSARY NOT to put a loved one in a nursing home, but if I absolutely have to I would do several things.
1. Research the nursing home. There are several web sites you can use to see reviews about the nursing home. Ask to see the results of the last survey. Every nursing home is required to have it avaliable to residents and family members.
2. Be alert for any signs of neglect. Time how many minutes it takes them to answer a call bell even time them at night by calling your loved one and having them do it while your on the phone, or if permitted, come in in the evening hours and time it yourself. Look arround and see if there are residents with bodily fluids on themselves.
3. Be in constant communication with the DON, ADON, and administrator, and bring up any problems. They want to know of neglect too so they can take the necessary actions.
4. Visit frequently. At least 3 times a week. Not only does this speed healing of your loved one, it also allows time to you to check up on the employees and let's them know your waching them.

Why not complain to the medical authority in your country or the Ministry of health.
If you have your records and facts straight you could sue them in a court of law for medical negligence. ( This is happenning in my country as well where little children have died due to the same reason as yours. Medical practise has become a business where humanity has lost its value) I'm soory about your plight.

Call the State and raise hell. They'll investigate the NH and determine if neglect took place especially if he was ignored. The state has the authority to issue hefty fines and close NH doors.
