Hi I need some peoples opinion about something. My dad has a medical condition called afib....where his heart doesnt beat properly. When this occurs the hospital places these electric sticky things on his chest. They put him asleep then they send 300 volts of electricity to restart his heart. This time they accidentally hit the button before he was asleep causing tremendous pain as you can imagine. Is there anything we can do?

Most likely not. I doubt you could even get even the sleaziest lawyer interested in the case.

Yes, you can. Things like this happen but its imperative that they trained professionals take their time and make sure they are correctively doing what they should be doing. Sometimes that is not what happens so you can actually talk to a lawyer to hit a malpractice suit against the doctors or assistants that performed this on your father. From there, they will be notified and they can either settle the suit with a cash out or go to court. Either way you will win because they messed up causing unneccesary pain and anguish on you and your father.

Remowirr was correct and I'll tell you why. The medical staff definitely did your father wrong and, at least theoretically, you should be able to sue them and get damages for that.
However, the reality is that you have absolutely no solid proof that this incident ever occurred. Basically, it would be your father's word against that of all the medical personnel who were there at the time it happened. Everyone who was there will simply deny that it ever happened; that your father only imagined it or misinterpreted what did happen. If one of them did decide to tell the truth and side with your father, he or she had better start looking for another job very quickly.
Any lawyer would tell you that your case is a no-win situation; no contest at all. Sorry, but that's one of life's unpleasant realities.

There is no such thing as "accidentallyl" throwing 300 joules of electricity thru someones chest. It was purposeful. You could ask he not be shocked for chronic a fib. Its usually treated with IV drugs unless his rate became so out of control, they felt his life was in jeapardy. The heart does not have to be re started, however the goal is stopping the abnormal rythm. The concern is the possiblity they will throw him into v tach or asystole when they shock him.
Also, they use an amnesia drug, so he very well may remember some of the jolt. also FYI...it usually takes more than 1 shock, so thank god he doesnt remember the other ones.
Not much you can do. Next time they will have to use more of the drug to sedate him. I heard Dick Cheney has to be defibrillated ever so often.
Hope your dads doing better and hope he has a normal sinus rythm.
