My son is 13 months old and was circumcised 2 weeks ago. I was given the run down on his surgery 2 times, both times I was told that before surgery he was going to have a IV put in so they could administer pain medication quickly after surgery. I was shocked when total procedure took about 15 minutes. (put him to sleep, gave IV, cut, and stitched). I was told he was done and I could go to the consultation room to wait for the doctor and then see my son. I could hear him screaming from the room. When I was let in to see him he was inconsolable, screaming, scratching me, hitting me, pushing me away, biting me... for 45 minutes he did this. I was upset and asked why he was in so much pain. They told me that it was normal for babies to be "fussy" after surgery. I was told that he was given Tylenol w/codeine. After medicine kicked in he was calm and sleepy. I checked his arm for needle marks from the IV and he had NONE. He wasn't given an IV medication for pain. All he was given was Tylenol w/codeine after he woke and was made to suffer in pain for 45 minutes until medicine kicked in! I was OUTRAGED! I complained to the nurse who had the anesthesiologist come in. The anesthesiologist blamed the doctor. I demanded to speak with the doctor who blamed the anesthesiologist... no one wanted to take blame for my son being in pain for almost an hour! I am very VERY angry still and don't know what I can do about this. Can I sue the hospital? Is it considered malpractice? Cruelty? What can I do?
Newborns are not put under IV sedation true. My son is not a newborn and was given "laughing gas" to put him out for surgery. The IV that I was told he was to get was for pain management purposes only. I remember signing papers giving permission for him to be put under but I don't remember if it said anything about the IV. The anesthesiologist said that the doctor opted not to have one because it would prolong surgery.
For all you haters out there go *F* yourself before you put blame on me. My son was born with kidney problems and other health issues. I didn't want him done at all but it become MEDICALLY NECESSARY! Think before you speak.

Retain a lawyer and sue.

write a letter of complaint to whoever is in charge of that department of the hospital, including the names of the doctor and anaesthesiologist involved and make sure you put across very clearly what's happened and how you feel about it. they should take it from there, especially if you threaten to sue.
...and the crowd goes wild!
As far as I understand, babies are generally not put under iv anesthesia for circumcision. Did the consent paper you signed for this procedure say anything about iv anesthesia? If not, then you don't have a case, as it is your word against the Dr. You may have misunderstood what they planned to do.

Sorry, but some of the blame goes to you too, for not having it done when he was first born and having it done at all. someday we'll quit this barbaric practice and nobody will be in pain except for those who prosper by the practice.

Shame goes to her for not having it done when he was newborn? The true shame goes to parents who have it done for no medical reason. They're giving no thought to their sons' human rights.

Most babies aren't given pain medication for a circumcision. Sadly doctors don't really care about babies because babies can't sue. (but the parents can)
Yes this is malpractice and you can sue. Don't contact the hospital anymore, contact a malpractice lawyer right away and listen to what he wants you to do about contacting the hospital further.
I would sue for malpractice and child abuse. BOTH doctors violated their hypocratic oath because the hypocratic oath states they must "do no harm". They did harm so they are on grounds for losing their license.
I imagine since he was that old he NEEDED the circumcision. I'm highly against the practice so if I HAD to have my son done and this happened I would be outraged like you. I would sue for both doctors licenses so they could never practice medicine ever again.
Having pain medication durring the procedure is a must even when under general anestetic. It doesn't prolong the surgery. That's a load of crap. Even if it did the dang thing only lasted 15 minutes... what a lazy doctor!

Any circumcision is cruelty, to answer your question directly.
Imagine how it would feel if you had had a female circumcision done to yourself, leaving your own genitals permanently mutilated and scarred. Circumcision is NEVER necessary for males or females; there are other treatments.
And while you're angry, it's quite possible that your son will be angry at the circumcision forced on him. There are hundreds of thousands of males who hate and resent the violation of their rights and their bodies by the circumcision forced on them without their consent or regard for their rights.
You may indeed have a basis for a lawsuit; doctors NEVER disclose the adverse effects and complications of male genital mutilation, called circumcision, and I've never heard of even one case of a doctor giving adequate aftercare information, either.
Your son has my deepest sympathy.
Circumcision is a fraud and a hoax.
A foreskin is not a birth defect; it is a birthright.
