Maybe i will listen the first time, and only for 10 seconds. If you talk about it for an hour, or if you tell me about it every day, i will probably cause another injury that you can brag about.
Why do people drone on about their fcking diabetes, bowel problems, their broken ribs, their asss-scope they got last week, their problems they have peeing, the staples in their blah blah.
Am I allowed to get nasty with such people?

Maybe it's a cry for help. Maybe they are in such pain and they wish someone would help them... like YOU!

Well you don't have to listen if it goes on too long... If you know they'll continuously talk about it, don't entertain further conversation. I bet most of those people don't think or know that they're offending you, they just want a sympathetic ear.

People generally want to talk about things that are important to them. If their medical situation is taking up a lot of their lives at the moment, they will of course want to talk about it with people they consider friends. I'm sure you've bored someone to tears at some point, but if they were your friends, they wouldn't have said so.

I had a boss like this. He talked on and on and on and on about his illnesses and injuries. He seemed to live for a new injury so he could start anew. It's like he was a sympathy sponge with claws. His special delight was in showing how much smarter than a doctor he was.
My guess is that it's the maladaptive, neurotic behavior of someone who desperately craves attention, sympathy, and respect. I sensed a a big emptiness there and a fragile ego.
Nasty? Nah, why bother? I used to just tune it out and then go about my business. I had the real sense that if I was perceived as being the slightest bit indifferent, he would react as is I were aggressively confrontational. Such was his mental state.

They could be looking for sympathy, looking for advice, looking for help. The best thing is to just don't say anything.
Don't get nasty with them, if you feel you want to, walk away.

You are so right. They say it almost as if they're proud of it. Like, oh yeah, i have diabetes. Or if someone else talks about having it, they bring it up like if it's a noble peace prize. I don't think it's to be nasty with them because they are this way but maybe if they keep on (which is obviously the case) then just say something like, hey, you almost sound proud of it. Or, could we not talk about that? But yeah, that is super annoying and stupid. This reminds me also of people who sound proud that they're on welfare and talk loudly about it.

Just don't expect any sympathy when it's YOU with the twisted bowel, haemorrhoids, hepatitis, diabetes, heart condition or cancer.
