i guy punched me because the friends i hung out with owed him money so i got hit instead of them because he couldn't get a hold of them. i figured i could sue him for pain and suffering, medical bills, medication, etc... and i was wondering what is the maximum lawsuit a person can make against the other person.

That would depend on the extent of the damage he did to you and the jurisdictional limit for such things...
However, if you sue this guy, you are very likely to receive a visit you do not want before or after the trial...

There isn't one. If you can prove $ 1 Billion in damages, then you can sue for $ 1 Billion.
You can sue for the actual cost of your medical treatment, including meds, any lost wages resulting from the attack, and any other quantifiable financial damages. That's the easy bit... just add up all your receipts.
Pain and suffering is harder. You'd be best advised to speak to a local lawyer familiar with what local courts are likely to award. Obviously, it varies with how much pain you actually had. A punch in the face that split your lip might be worth $ 100, a vicious beating that left you in bed for a week would be worth thousands.
Of course, the other thing to bear in mind is "What's the maximum he can PAY?". There's no point walking out of court with a $ 100,000 award if he's unemployed and broke and living in his 1971 Pinto, is there? Then all you've done is cost yourself your court and filing fees.
