i was playing football and the area near my thumb on my palm became swollen. i can bend my thumb and the thumb is roughly the same size as my other so it is not swollen. the only part that hurts and is swollen in on my palm. I have broken my other thumb before and i dont think my thumb is broken. i cant touch my ring finger or my pinky and there is only pain when i move my thumb (not bend it). Should i go to a doctor immediately or can it wait til the morning
Randy
well you can wait till morning and just ice it and go to the doctors tomorrow

honestly, I don't think you need to see a doctor. You probably sprained something, but there isn't much to do for fingers. ice it, tape it, and rest it.
feel better :)

First off, I am not a doctor and if you are truly concerned, I recommend seeing your physician.
By the sounds of it you may have injured the soft tissue in your hand. Your best treatment is to use a Cold Compress (ICE or Cold Pack) for 20 minutes on then 20 minutes off. Do not touch the Cold Compress directly to your skin (this could result in frostbite).
You seem to have full range of motion, sensation and you did not describe a change in the colour at the injury site OR below the injury site.
The next day, the injury site will probably be rock hard (the muscles will be in spasm). You will also notice that range of motion may be limited. Treatment for muscles in spasm is heat, a heat pack or just sitting in a bathtub of warmed water should help that.
Taking acetaminophen/ibuprofen or another pain reliever for the pain should also help the pain.
If you do have any concern, or you notice over the next few days improvement not occurring, I would strongly recommend seeing your doctor, nurse or medical practitioner for further advice.
Hope this helps,
Andy
I've broken lot's of finger before and they really don't do anything except give pain meds and put on thing on to keep it straight (which you can easily make yourself without paying for a doctor...So I would wait.
