I don't know of any cure per se, but the reason your physician is recommending antidepressants is that certain classes of them (the triclylics) have been found to suppress the center in the brain that interprets pain, and so it does not necessarily mean that you are depressed. Beware though, those types of drugs have many side-effects, chronic xerostomia (dry mouth) being the mildest of them all. Feel better.

Try this link here, you may just learn something new that I do not know. I am a nurse and I look after people in the ER that come in with spinal injuries and also up on the ward after spinal surgeries. There are many procedures out there and the thing is it is truly up to you and your own preference which way you want to go.
Spinal surgery will not always work for you...alternative therapies and hydrotherapy may be your option.
Anti depressants are a good idea, if you so choose to take them. It will allow you to cope with everyday living a little easier...but coping mechanisms can also be taught to you through a counsellor that may visit you at home..this is a good option too.

I've had 4 back surgerys. NEVER allow them to do a fusion unless your life depends on it. They don't help. I got an L4-L5-S1 fusion in 1997. It never helped. Now I have a neurostimulator implant to control back and leg pain.

I saw a program on the Discovery Channel a while back where they went in and repaired some herniated discs by trimming off the bulging part and "pumping up" the disc with some sort of spongy or rubbery substance. You should look into it. They did it and it worked for the guy on tv!!!

About your sleep problem, I just had surgery Friday and my anesthesia guy told me to try "Valerian Root". It's a natural substance that's supposed to help. It was less than $ 5USD for 60 pills and it helps me sleep. I've been on prescription narcotic sleeping pills for almost 10 years. No more. Try this stuff.
