LAHORE: Family of three-year-old Imanae Malik, who died due to apparent negligence of hospital staff, have stared an international awareness campaign against the negligent behaviour of doctors in Pakistan. Imanae died when a doctor at the Doctors Hospital Lahore administered high-potency anaesthesia to the child when she was brought to the hospital for treatment of minor burn injuries to her hand. As part of the campaign, the family has started putting up billboards across Lahore portraying a picture of Imanae that reads, "I died because of criminal negligence of the Doctors Hospital." The boards were initially put up on three roads in the city -- Defence Main Boulevard, Qaddafi Stadium and Shama Chowk -- and the family plans to expand the campaign to other places across the city. The billboards also give addresses of websites dedicated to the awareness campaign and follow-ups of the case. It is for the first time in the country's history that the family of a victim of alleged medical negligence has publicised the issue through billboards and the Internet, press conferences, emails and text messages. Imanae's father Aqeel Malik told Daily Times that he had received hundreds of condolence and condemnation messages from all over the world and even people from the United Kingdom had pledged support to the family.
