I'm not very literate when it comes to medical diagnosis, but a friend of mine set me up with a very nice girl on a blind date, but she texted me and told me that she has cerebral palsy. I'm not quite sure what it is. Is it something to worry about? What does it do to someone? Is it transmittable? I'm sorry if I sound foolish, offensive, or dazed, but I honestly do not know what it is.

I don't know a aot about it, but it's a disease that affects the nervous system, people may walk a lot differently or seem to have a strange kind of balance, and no, nothing to worry about.

if you could not make out then she is not handicapped by her palsy so go ahead and take her out.

I have a sneaky suspicion that somebody is taking you to the cleaners or that this nice girl is just to nice to say: I´ll take a rain check on that date.
Cerebral palsy is a condition (not a disease) whereby the baby is deprived from oxygen during a certain time at birth due to incorrect positioning or strangulation by the cord.
This lack of oxygen (hypoxia) causes part of the brain cells to die. This alas is an irreversible process as neurons do not regenerate.
According to the damage which can be light to very serious the patient shows light to very serious motoric impairment in one or various groups of motoric muscles.
Most of the patients cannot control their facial muscles and LOOK like retarded individuals or Down´s syndrome. Howerver they are not. Some of them are brillant. That is their drama: a brillant mind in a non functional body.
Maybe I was too ironic at the beginning and the girl just wanted to warn you what to expect and to be able to hide your initial repulsion and horror. Later on you learn to love them.

I've told women that I've dated about my disability early on. I don't want some chick to think that I'm going to be David Hasselhoff that can rake in millions of dollars when in reality I am not. Some chicks accept this, some chicks don't. I just don't like surprises in relationships anymore, and I'm sure she doesn't want some guy to just say publicly, "Oh... you didn't tell me about the DISABILITY-thing." Heh, I've been in her shoes :D

Ok sweetie. I have a son with Cerebral Palsy. The "retarded look" as someone said, ( I hate that term) is not always true. If you were to look at my son, you would call me a liar for saying he has Cerebral Palsy. It can occur in several ways, yes it can occur at birth. CP is a general term for brain damage. But it doesn't tell you how bad. There are forms of it all degrees. My son plays tag football with the "normal" kids every summer on the city league. He is in regular classes with a little help. Cerebral Palsy is just a term. She is still a regular girl. Go have fun. If you don't like her, don't go out with her again. But give her a chance. You will be suprised. If she can text you , you don't have much to worry about. :0)

im an 18 yr old guy with cp. CP effects my balance so i walk with a walker. i also have"some" difficulty speaking cleary, but it could just be me. its not transferable at all. be aware that she may need assitance in your vehicle if she has a walker you will probably have to help fold/unfold it.
some general advice:
1 she will probaby be self concious of the disability and what you think, so: DO NOT STARE, judge when she needs help.odds are she wont need it as much as you think!
2 treat her as "normal" as your used 2
if it feels awkward waiting for her if she walks at a slower pace, then walk at a slower pace. Don't just walk normally and wait for her.
KEEP THE MOOD LIGHT AND TRY TO IMPRESS HER (it will increase her cofidence while making the date less awkward)
In the US, there are at least five hundred thousand infants affected by cerebral palsy. The disorder is caused by improper carriage of the mother during the early months when a child is still developing in the womb. In the survey done in the year 2003, Center for Disease Control said that one child affected by cerebral palsy needs at least 0,000 dollars for the cost of living. People affected with such disorder need a little extra care that sometimes may require financial compromise.
Cerebral palsy is a disorder causing a low or non-coordination of the muscle to the brain. This low or non-reaction of the body muscle is due to the brain damage acquired by a person during the early stages in his life. When a person has cerebral palsy he cannot properly move his limbs like a normal person.
Cerebral is a medical term used to refer for the brain. It is an adjective for the cerebrum, a part of the brain that is responsible for the motion, feelings, speech, sight an
