I have been devistated by the loud motorcycle noise in the neighborhood. Motorcyclists, please do not answer this question. I beg you.

I didn't know there was a motorcycle law. What does this law say? It's legal to ride motorcycles. So if they bug you - do what I do and sleep with a fan on or do something to drown out the noise. I don't think suing is going to get you anywhere.

You could try, but I don't know how effective it will be

First of all, does your city/county HAVE a noise law? Best to make sure of that first. If so, try to work with them on this issue - go to council meetings, send an e-mail with your concerns to their website, or mail a letter to them if no website is available. If there is a defined law & you have already taken these steps with no resolution, write a letter to your local paper & get a petition started. Canvass your nieghborhood for signers. I emphatize with you - I live on a main street in a town where I think every 5th vehicle is a Harley with straight pipes or a Dodge diesel truck with stacks - really fun when they leave the local bars at 2:30 am & roar home on weekends. I always say this is is the mating call of a drunk redneck: Brrrrrrr-RAAAAAAAAP-pop-pop!

Go ahead. If you can afford the lawyer and court costs. And enjoy the cops stopping and ticketing you at every street corner for making a flaming nuisance of yourself.

You could make complaints, but there is nothing much else you could really do. I have the same problem. Be glad you don't live across the street from a pool hall frequented by bikers. (It's quite nice be woken up at 2am when they rev at each other when leaving.)

No. Speak to your local council representative (politician) about the problem.

You can sue all you want, but you wont do much but antigonize the police. Police can not be held liable for others breaking the law. Their inaction is not an offense for which you can obtain a judgement. You would achieve a much better response, if you collect signatures from all of your neighbors to a letter outlining the problem, and asking for the help of the police in solving it. Send the letter to your mayor, and to your local representative on the town or city council, as well as your state representative. elected officials are very sensitive to the requests of a group of voters, and they are the allies you need to spur the police into action.

If you believe you have a case... contact a lawyer and get their advice.
Also... try this question under the law & ethics section.

I was wondering how that noise law stuff worked. There is a Harley Davidson motorcyle club that gathers and hangs out down the street from where I live and I hear those loud bikes all time of day and night. My poor daughter cries everytime one passes by.
If you find out anything please share. I don't even know where to begin to look.

Motorcycle rider here. You need to find out if your area has a noise law, and then REQUEST that your local law enforcement check into the problem. You never want to go right to "sue", you want to work with the police department not piss them off. If it is a single bike on your street, try asking him if there is anyway he can leave the area a bit quieter (shifting gears to quiet the rumble).
