What qualities do you need to be a personal injury lawyer?
Nathalie
In terms of qualities, the following are definitely very helpful:
1.Diligence: There are going to be nights where you'll pull a lot more than the typically standard 8 hours. You have to be willing to work those long hours and perform the work effectively in spite of exhaustion etc. Work isn't always easy- otherwise we'd call it play.
2.Compassion: There are folks out there who say that lawyers are heartless, lying snakes out to make a quick buck-- They don't have a clue what they're talking about (save for a very few exceptions). In order to represent a client whose been injured, you have to be empathetic to their cause, or you're just cheating both yourself and your client
3. Intellect: You really have to know and understand what you're doing if you want to be effective. A major part of this stems from schooling, but some of the most valuable lessons you learn about the legal system you learn in the trenches through work experience.
4. People Skills: You'll be dealing with people on a very frequent basis. Many of said clients will be in seriously ill or seriously injured conditions. You'll want to come across as approachable, considerate and eager to listen to their situation. These are the people who are really relying on you- don't intimidate them.
5.Resilience: Litigation is never a totally peaceful process- if it were, there'd be no legal system, and I'd probably be an MD and not a JD. When cases go to arbitration or to trial, you need to keep firm in your resolve. Your job is to cut the best deal you can to help your client- you can't flake out.
I could probably give about a hundred qualities that could also help, but that'd be a lot of reading. These are some of the most ideal qualities in my opinion.
Best regards
