If I needed an attorney or lawyer, do I pay him up front or can I pay for it on a monthly basis in most circumstances?

Most will require a retainer fee. How much would depend on the lawyer or law firm.

Usually there's a retainer that has to be paid to hire the lawyer, then an hourly fee. This varies from lawyer to lawyer, so you need to "shop around."
As to when they need to be paid, this is between you and the lawyer. Some may want the money right away, and some may be willing to do monthly payments.
