While it's true that doctors make mistakes and should be accountable, they shouldn't be so accountable that it ruins the health care system.
Doctors sometimes order unnecessary tests to cover themselves in case of a lawsuit, which increases medical costs.
Also, medical malpractice insurance premiums are already affecting the availabilty of some kinds of doctors. For example, a gynecologist working in some parts of the US would pay insurance of more than $ 250,000 per year. Therefore, gynecologists (as one example) simply aren't available in some areas of the US, and medical students are shying away from the field.
I think Texas has a cap on damages awarded in lawsuits, that has helped with the insurance rates.

I agree with you..In Florida I lost a ton of doctors because they were all leaving the state because of Malpractice Insurance Rates..A lot of them moved to Texas..My brother has a shunt in his head that has to be changed every few years..and there are surprisingly few brain surgeons in Florida ( compared to the population) Politicians need to help these doctors who are being forced into other professions or are forced to move. PS..my brother graduated from Johns Hopkins ( not a doctor) but his friends who went into the medical field were all pretty much advised to go into research that with all the malpractice it is not worth being a "real" doctor w/patients.

According to publicintegrity.org
Trial lawyers are the largest special interest group donating to political parties and candiates.
They give more than the next 20 largest special interest groups combined.
IE: more than big oil, insurance, pharmacutical, realestate, etc combined.
80% of thier donations, go to the DNC and democratic candiates.
So of course Obama is NOT going to do anything about the high cost of malpractice insurance.
He is a lawyer, he knows where his bread is buttered.

Missouri here.
My doctor says that insurance is the cause of many not becoming doctors. Also that they are working the office with two doctors because, even in an area like I live in there are lots of older, retired people who need doctors more often than the younger people, they can't find doctors.
If Obama gets his plan through, they may have to close the office, which will leave only two other doctors in the area, because they won't be able to afford to stay open.
In my county there are only 8 towns, the largest has a population of about 3000. Our county seat is about 2500 and the rest are all under 1000 population. It is an agricultural area.
AMERICA, first and foremost!
