i'm currently filling out paperwork to change my name, (i'm a minor and my mom will be accompanying me), and i'm wondering why would i need to go to court, all the judge has to do is decide whether he agrees or disagrees to change my name or not. i mean do you seriously have to have an attorney and go to court? what if i showed up to court and did a hiphop dance and rap on why the judge should change my name, that'd be okay right? he'd HAVE to say yes.

No you dont need a lawyer, maybe if they dont let you then you can get one and try to fight your right to change your name. but you dont need it

You don't need a lawyer.

No. All you do is fill out some paper work and then go before a judge.

No you don't need a lawyer, but you might want to consult with one first and I'll tell you why.

The court will ask if you have provided proper notice to all concerned. That means letting the whole world know that you are planning to chance your name. Thanks to crooks, the courts now want to make sure everyone, especially your creditors, are aware that you will be assuming a new name. Same with any obligations you may have, the court wants to know, in fairness, that you have a legitimate reason to change your name and not "scam" anyone.

Lawyers know the routine and can facilitate the process, but they cost money. Sometimes the judge will walk you through the process, and if you haven't crossed a "T" or dotted an "i", then they will postpone the proceedings until you do the work first.

Have fun :)
