Ways to Make coverage more affordable in my opinion.
1st. Hospitals should be for treating the injured and ill. They should not
be for profit.
2nd. Those entering the health-care profession after working should be
given a five year grace period on any loans made to pay for their
schooling then be able to pay back the money at no interest.
3rd. Prices should be set by the government.
4th. All insurance billings will use the same forms and codes.
5th. All insurance premiums will be set on a tier system depending on
the income level of the insured.
6th. Good doctors will not be punished by high medical malpractice
insurance premiums do to those who are careless. Doctors who
have never had a complaint filed malpractice insurance will be set
at a low rate.
7th. Drug companies when releasing new drugs will be given longer
periods of exclusiveness on the drug. This will allow them to sell
the drug over a longer amount of time at a much lower price.
Does anyone agree or disagree? What are your thoughts?
solaran- As to dropping frivolous lawsuits I agree but that will not lower malpractice rates insurance companies have said they will not lower rates. So we cap amounts person can sue for and what they can sue for this is great for the insurance companies more profits for them doctors still paying high cost.
You find it a bad idea for the government to regulate prices, but are ok that insurance companies are doing that very thing right now.
hospitals have to be profitable to hire good doctors and buy equipment I agree 100%, but what about the investors making millions per year from hospitals and especially clinics, and still not having the latest equipment
In addition hospitals do need money to expand when needed. So instead of the extra 5 million they made in profit having 4 million go to the investors and 1 million to improvements now you have 5 million going for improvements. Argue that point
Dixie- yes I have seen exactly what you are talking about, this problem we will have no matter what. Their numbers though won't change today they are abusing the system, and will do the same tomorrow no matter what changes we make to the system.
kit fang- I agree that when more companies are allowed to produce and sell the drug prices fall, on the other hand companies do need to recomp the money put into bringing the drug to market, this way they would be able to have the roi over a longer period instead of trying to recomp the investment in say 5 years they would have 10 years so the price could be cut in half or more.
segerdude- I'm not saying the government should run it. Insurance companies could still be profitable. The days of record profit every quarter might be over. But how does insurance companies making record profits make your health-care any better?
segerdude- I'm not saying the government should run it. Insurance companies could still be profitable. The days of record profit every quarter might be over. But how does insurance companies making record profits make your health-care any better? As for medicade and medicare, there are lots of problems with abuse by doctors, and suppliers. those that abuse the system should be punished not honest people.

i think your 6th point would be a good incentive to doctors. for the 5th, how would the tier system differ for those who are uninsured? 7th- would the exclusiveness motivate the companies to sell cheaper, or to jack up the prices? with no competition, it tends to raise the price.
overall, good plan :)

How about we just ban frivolous lawsuits involving doctors and hospitals? If it wasn't for those lawsuits, thousands a year, then the hospitals and doctors could drop the tens of millions of dollars annually they pay for medical malpractice insurance. And with that monkey off of their back, prices would drop quickly.
And your 3rd point is horrible. If the government regulated prices of services, there would be absolutely no reason for hospitals to strive to be better than any other hospital in their area. There would be no reason to go out and recruit the best doctors and nurses and support staff. No reason to go out and get the newest/best/fastest equipment to lower patient care times.
Hospitals have to generate some profit. How else do you expect these hospitals to purchase newer equipment, expand upon their facilities, renovate the older facilities, etc., etc.?

all good suggestions, but you forgot one important thing. all the free loaders that hit the e r. i worked in a health care for 38 years and believe me the dollar loss is staggering, i seen people come in that could afford beer but not able to pay there bill, people with a stupid things that could Waite till morning and go to there dr.to be treated (in grown toe nail) among some. the pay roll you would not believe, along with all other debts that go along with health care.insurance co.'s and drug co.'s are killing us today.

the problems in this country is greed and it will always continue.

I agree, apart from the last point. The moment exclusivity runs out on a drug and anyone can sell it, prices fall dramatically. Therefore, reducing how long only one company can sell the drug will mean the price is less after only one or two years, instead of five or ten, so more people can easily access vital drugs.

The government can't even handle medicare, so how do you think they are going to deal with the rest of the general public? Congress keeps lowering the compensation for doctors treating medicare patients. This is causing the doctors to stop accepting new medicare patients as they are LOOSING money.

Yes, doctors should be slaves to us all.
