I served 4 years in the Army reserve and was medically discharged due to Schizophrenia on the military part and Bipolar type I on the civilian side, and they're making me pay $ 1300 because I didn't finish my 6-year contract due to developing this mental illness.
I contacted a officer about it and he said the military isn't supposed to do that and to contact a lawyer asap...the US government has a Pioneer Credit Recovery on me threatening me to stop the SSI and SSDI benefits along with all my social security benefits.
What type of lawyers or attorneys I am supposed to call? are attorneys and lawyers the same?

Why don't you get in touch with the Judge Advocate General's office and see if they can straighten it out?

you need a social security lawyers..and anti discrimination lawyer..

I'd say you need a lawyer who specialized in social security/disability cases, their out there.
Yes, attorney's and lawyers are one in the same.

I would say go with JAG because they would know the ins and outs of military policy better.

Have you tried to contact the Judge Advocates office for the Army to inquire what the rules and laws are concerning this. I would not go on just the word of one officer, who could be morally correct but legally incorrect.
The JAG office should be able to tell you what law they are applying in your case to justify asking you to repay the expenses. They can act on your behalf if the Army is not following the law and should not be after you. And, if you really do owe the money under military law, they may be willing to help you work out a payment arrangement that you could live with.
If you seek a lawyer of your own, make sure he/she is well versed in three things, SSDI law, Recruiting contracts and laws, and military law. Remember this is likely going to be settled in a military court, under military law and not civilian law.

I'd say start with any old attorney and let them find a referral for you.

It is very important that you get the right legal counsel.
Lawyers and Attorneys specialize in different catagories.
Call the State Bar in your State and ask them for the names of three attorneys that specializes in Social Security Claims.. One may give you a free consultation.
I would also contact your Congressman in your state..sometimes they can cut thru a lot of red tape in a hurry.

You could look for attorneys in your local yellow pages that specialize in SSI issues. There are attorneys who specialize in Social Security Law, so that is definitely an option. There are also attorneys who specialize in disability claims.
You could also run a google search on "civilian military attorney" and see if you can find someone who is licensed in your state that is more familiar with laws specific to dealing with the military.
A web search can't hurt. Many firms will answer basic questions or even provide initial consultation at no cost. Find as many websites as you can for attorneys who specialize in military law, call or email them and see if their advice will help you narrow down your choice and give you more direction.
Start with posting in the forum for military law at freeadvice.com, you should get more specific information there.
My best advice to you would be to do as much homework as you can, and don't pay a retainer until you are confident that this attorney will be able to represent your case. If you get the sense from initial conversation that he/she has not handled a similar case, look for a different attorney.
