I would say to use a lawyer no matter what because the insurance companies dig and will take you to the cleaners. They look for anything they can to prevent themselves from having to pay too much.

Definitely use a lawyer. Those insurance companies will do anything in their power to give you as little as possible and constantly hound you to "settle".
Forget it, get a good personal injury lawyer who can plead your case. They will generally take 33.333% of the settlement, but will get you a significantly more money.

There is no mulitplier used when determining general damages (pain and suffering) in an injury claim. Your adjuster will take into consideration the severity of the accident, injuries and type and lenght of treatment and make you a fair offer. Even if you retain an attorney, there is no guarantee they will get you 3x's the specials and in that case, they'll take 25-40% off the top. You should be REASONABLE in your expectations regarding the offer the insurance company will make you. You should think about exactly how much this accident/injuries has affected your life. If you are unhappy with the carrier's offer - then make VALID ARGUMENTS, not dollar arguments and they may be able to justify an increase in your offer.
