My father is 57 years old. He was going to his doctor monthly and always brought up horrible chest pain he would get at times. He was getting odd spots on his arms. He had an (Mri, EKG) it did show that he had a blood clot some where but he did not know where. He did however prescribe him Nitroglycerin for chest pains but NEVER sent him to a Cardiologist. Two weeks ago he had a heart attack, was without oxygen for 3-5 minutes. The EMTS got him back to life after 3 chest shockings. ((He was clinically dead.)) He was in a coma. The doctors told us to make decisions because due to the lack of oxygen which they think was even longer than 5 minutes, he would probably be in a vegetation state IF he did not die...They sent him into a cath lab and he had a clotted artery! Thats what caused the heart attack...so they put a stent in the artery. They put him into hypothermic suspension where they lowered his body temp to lessen brain damage.. Miracly he just suffers short-term memory loss.
CORRECTION=I WOULD BE DOING THE LAWSUIT FOR MY FATHER BECAUSE HE LIKE I SAID HAS SHORT TERM MEMORY AND KNOWS NOTHING WHAT HAPPEN. ALSO I CALLED HIS DOCTOR WHEN I GOT THE PHONE CALL THAT HE WAS REVIVED BACK TO LIFE AND HIS DOCTOR SAID "GEE..HE NEVER TOLD ME HE HAD CHEST PAIN" AND I SAID "OH REALLY? WELL WHY DID YOU PRESCRIBE HIM NITROGLYCERIN?" AND HE SAID WELL UMM..I DON'T KNOW DON'T WORRY YOUR DAD WILL BE FINE HE WILL BE OKAY
And to also add to this.....(((SORRY!!))).. When my dad returned home (Which he is living with me now) his doctor prescribed him pain medication 5/825mg instead of his norm. 5/525! Thank God the pharmacist realized his normal dose.. so we had to call the doc. and get a new prescription written out. He still hasn't referred him to a Cardiologist...((I have since took that initiative myself))

It's possible that you have a malpractice lawsuit. However, the Doctor prescribed him medication for his heart. Most likely he wanted to see how this would affect his chest pain before he referred him to a specialist. Your father's insurance company may require this type of action since it is expensive to have tests done at a Cardiologist. You can try speaking to a Lawyer, but if the Doctor says he was starting to take the steps to deal with your Father's chest pains by prescribing medication, then I am not sure your lawsuit will hold up in court.

Yeah it sounds to me like you do have one. But you'd need to see a specialist to hammer out the details.

Very difficult. A primary care physician can handle some conditions but is impossible to say which ones are going to be complicated. At the time that the doctor sees your father and he thinks that it was not necessary to sent your father at that point to a cardiologist that was his medical decision and that can't be penalized.

First, great news about your dad. He should be a vegetable but he is still your dad.

I would ask his doctor why s/he never advised a cardiologist. Use that answer to decide if the doctor was on the right side of the situation. Sometimes they have a good answer and that will be more important than the aggravation and hassle that accompanies a lawsuit...especially with your dad a sick man.

Actually, YOU have no suit. Your father might. He at least has enough to look into it. Whether the failure to properly diagnose and treat falls below the standard of care is a tricky question but this scenario is at least worth looking into. Contact an attorney with experience in medical malpractice.
