I've been dating my girlfriend for a year now, and ever sense I started dating her, her doctor has been increasing her dosage of 2 different kinds of antidepressants. He just increased each pill by a 100mg, so an increase of 200mg. So shes taking 500mg total of them when added together, shes only like 5'4" and about 120-125 pounds. I'm not like anti doctor or anything I understand some people need them but it seems like insanity that shes taking 500mg and is on i think 2 other types of medications and is only 18. I've told her mom that she should get a second opinion about it, considering that her doctor is in a bad area and theirs a good chance of possible medical malpractice, but the mom calls me crazy for questioning somebody with a Dr next to their name. I was just wondering if taking that many drugs is at all healthy or going to cause long term damage to her. Thanks!
Shes not suicidal or anything, she can be a bit moody but everybody gets pissy at times. All I was thinking was maybe slowly lowering the amount to say 50mg to see if shes over the bad that happened years ago. I do know that if you don't need medication theirs no point in taking them, but then every body labels me as crazy so annoying :(

If i were you i would get your girlfriend to get reassessed by another physician ...... and the fact that she is 18 also means that she doesn't need her mothers approval.... and the doctor is bound by patient doctor confidentiality.

Find out what the recommended dosage is for the particular antidepressant she is taking.... my guess is that she is taking a dosage that probably is way too high..... but i'm not a doctor..... make an appointment with another physician and find out whether the dosage she's on is massive and get them to help her wean off them slowly..... if that's what she wants.

bless

You are not crazy by any means to question what a doctor says or prescribes. Doctors are the third leading cause of death in the US - 250,000 deaths annually....and based on a study in 2000, 106 000 people die each year in the US taking the medication - as the doctor directed! Anti depressants are thought to prevent what serotonin is left in the brain from "escaping" although the truth is drug companies don't really know what is going on and state on the package insert - method of action: unknown. Well the answer is to increase serotonin levels and there are products on the market that do just that without the side effects..oh one of the many side effect of anti depressants lists depression O_o. Low serotonin levels are caused by many factors from lack of essential vitamins to a thyroid imbalance. Great link about low serotonin and how to boost levels >>> - http://www.integrativepsychiatry.net/serotonin.html

Anti depressants increase the risk of suicide especially under the age of 25. This is a black box warning on all anti depressants. 500mg is a lot of medication...keep an eye out for any suicidal behaviour. Anti depressant drugs have been overhyped, they are not as effective as the doctors are being told by the drug sales reps and medical journals. In fact, the clincial trials were revealed in 2008, taking a sugar pill (placebo) gave the same results as taking an anti depressant...with front cover headlines in the papers stating - the drugs don't work. It is essential to ween off anti depressants slowly as sudden withdrawal can cause severe side effects.

Look, it's very sweet that you are concerned about another person - not many people evolve that far emotionally....

This might seem a question out of left field, but how does SHE feel about it? Does she experience unpleasant side effects? How does she feel about taking medications, period? If I were you, I would speak to her about your concerns. If you can't, well then what kind of relationship do you have, right?

The numbers don't tell us much of anything - a few mg's of one drug can be as effective of hundreds of another, so the dose without the name is meaningless - but in either case, the answer remains the same.

Speaking as a doctor and psychotherapist, we can't help you if we don't know the exact medication.
