The elementary school secretary called me a while back and said that my sons tooth was hurting. She said that she gave him a salt water rinse, and that he would be fine to carry out the day. When he got home..I asked him how his tooth was, it was a little sore..but no swelling..I gave him a rinse at home and some motrin. That was the last time I heard about his tooth from the school. About three weeks later the school nurse called me and gave me a number to call some lady that was supposed to help me get him some dental care (I was pending medicaid as my husband had just been laid off) This lady came to my house with a social worker, and a police officer!!!! Apparently the school nurse told her that I was not trying to get treatment for my son...I was furious..I would like to add a little bit of history here ( 1. My son has seen the dentist, and been on insurance since his first birthday. 2. I never got a call from the nurse at school and she said that my son had been in there everyday for four days!! ) Now this lady is telling me that if I do not follow her instructions that she is going to open a cps case on me...I feel like this is ridiculous..I took my son to a dentist and got him some antibiotics, and the dentist said I can wait until medicaid goes through to get his tooth pulled, but the case worker said I have to get it fixed before medicaid...so who do I listen to? My sons dentist, or this case worker lady (whom I get a feeling is an ignorant person on a power trip) Am I neglecting my son? He is on antibiotics and has seen a dentist his entire life, he has always had medical care, he is clean, my house is clean, he has nice clothes and toys, I have a loving, safe home environment, so I don't understand how she can threaten to open a cps case on me for medical neglect?? Please help me..do you think she can do that? Thank you
ps. Sorry if I was rambling..I am just very upset and stressed over this situation. It is the scariest thing when you try to be the best parent you can be, and someone steps in and says that they are going to call cps on you. I honestly did not ever think someone would even think about doing that to me.
@ "Parent" I would NEVER wait weeks to get something taken care of if my son was in pain!!!!!!!!! I took him to the dentist as soon as I found out he was in pain, thank you very much..I am however waiting until the medicaid kicks in to have the tooth pulled because the DENTIST said that he would be fine.....the infection caused his sore tooth, and the antibiotics cleared that up. Did you know that most dentists won't even pull an infected tooth. They wait until the infection is gone..

ALWAYS listen to your doctor.
even in the court system they get advice from doctors.
this lady needs to get a grip, you obviously have a handle on the situation.

ARGH!! This is what pisses me off about the CPS system!! A mom, trying her best, is harassed needlessly. Meanwhile, kids are killed every day by abusive parents or step parents or mom's boyfriend or foster parents (who supposedly are screened by CPS)! Grrr...
I have no advice, sorry. But I feel your pain!

Give her the name and number for your dentist and tell her to call him as the dentist said that your son's tooth does not need to be pulled right now.

He is on antibiotics which indicate an infection. Fine if you just found out about it and were in the process or getting it fixed. Not days but weeks later you still haven't had it done. It took a cop and a social worker to get you to have someone look at it. The infection means the kids been in pain. And you have the gall to be angry at the school for forcing you to do what should have already been done. You where trying to wait it out until your insurance kicked in, that I can understand. But you pushed it to far and the kids the one paying the price.
About three weeks later the school nurse called me and gave me a number to call some lady that was supposed to help
Yes you did, there was an issue and you didn't address it in timely fashion for whatever reason. Don't get all mad at me because of it.

It is hard to say without knowing what the problem with the tooth was. If it was something obvious that clearly needed medical attention, then they were within their bounds to make a report...especially since they called to be sure you were aware of the problem.
Get a statement from your dentist to give to the social worker...I wouldn't think she would override the advice of a doctor...but you should expect them to follow-up to be sure the problem is treated.

I'm a social worker and from my experience in this type of situation, as long as the dentist gives consent that he is on antibiotics and that it is ok to wait until medicaid goes through, that should be all you need. A letter written by the dentist or a number the case worker could call to contact him should be all you need, I really don't understand why she is insisting on you have the dental work done if the doctor is willing to wait for the medicaid, obviously if the dental work was life threatening, he would insist you go ahead with it. Dental work or really no medical care is cheap, so going ahead with the procedure could really put you in a bind, which is why you are going on medicaid in the first place. Usually a dentist will make you take the full prescription of antibiotics before even doing any type of procedure, such as pulling a tooth, in fear that it would be full on infection. I would ask the dentist to write a letter or even ask him if it would be ok if a case worker contacted him to verify the situation. None the less, if he has been in the nurse's office everyday, they really should have contacted you. Its like the school is going behind your back when they have been acting as if the whole situation wa nothing from the start. I would just explain that the doctor is fine with waiting and that he can verify everything. If they don't want to cooperate, have them get medicaid to you more quickly. On occasions we have gotten medicaid sorted out for families who really needed it (usually we would provide them with their number so that a doctor could go ahead and bill medicaid), so if she is really insistent on it, tell her you can't afford it and medicaid is pending, if she can't wait, maybe she knows a way to get you number/card more quickly, otherwise your listening to your doctor. You aren't neglecting him medically, this is a matter of waiting on the medicaid process, which isn't ideal I know. Parents have to cancel appointments/change them all the time for different things because medicaid doesn't come through in time, its no big deal, and if the doctor is fine with everything, the case worker should be also.

Sounds like lawyer time. If you've given them your dentist's contact info, and your dentist permission to discuss your son's case with them, and they don't back off, then it sounds like you're right. A public servant on a power trip. I'd also have the lawyer look at the school nurse as well.
