I had a really bad experience with my c-section. They put in the epidural and started the medication and I was completely numb for the procedure, but then they wheeled me into the recovery room and removed the tube very quickly after the surgery and it felt like I was on no pain control at all. I was told that the medication they give you lasts a long time so you won't be feeling much pain. I was screaming because I was hurting so bad and they gave me some IV pain medicine, but it wasn't even touching the pain. It was excruciating, I've never experienced anything like that in my life.

Since then I've done some research and it said that they often leave the epidural in for 24 hours. Is that the norm? I feel like there was an error made my my care. I suppose it's possible that I just react weird to the medicine they gave me, but I have a feeling it's malpractice. I'm in the process of getting my medical records so I can go over them. What was your experience with your c-section? Did they remove the epidural right away?
Thank you for your expertise. Do you know what could've happened? I just don't understand why I was in so much pain. They did give me IV pain meds, and the meds definitely had an effect on the rest of my system, I was slurring my words, but it felt like it didn't even touch my uterus. It felt like it didn't even provide pain control. I've had pain meds before for kidney stones, so I know that the pain meds worked ( I think it was a combination of dilaudid and morphine in my IV). I just want to figure out what happened and I want to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Kisses it better ♥
When I had my c/section they let it wear off within 2 hours if I remember rightly, I was up walking to the bathroom after about 5 or 6 hours. I had one Diclofenac suppository for pain relief and after that I just took paracetamol if I felt a little sore.

Why were you in so much pain after the c/section, once labour has stopped there are no more contractions? I don't remember being in any great pain after the op, just discomfort from the wound if I tried to move too quickly.

I've been administering anesthesia for almost 2 decades, have done many hundreds of C-sections, and have NEVER left an epidural in following a C-section. Ever.

I prefer spinal anesthesia for C-sections, but that also has to wear off.

Sometimes we put narcotics into the spinal or epidural that can last about 18 hrs, but they also can have 18 hours of side effects (nausea and vomiting, intense itching, respiratory depression).

You should have been given more IV medication. It can take a LOT - 30 mg of morphine is not unusual following a C-section. That may have been the responsibility of your obstetrician, as they are usually the ones that prescribe pain meds and follow your care after surgery.

You can sue, but there's no way you're going to win anything. It takes a dead or deformed baby to get any real money. Why don't you go take a look at your child and see how lucky you truly are?
