Raouf Amin el-Araby, a 52-year-old Egyptian doctor who has been serving the Saudi Royal family for 20 years, was convicted of malpractice. Egyptian newspapers reported that he was accused of driving a Saudi princess "to addiction", reportedly after treating a Saudi princess with painkillers.

Initially sentenced to 7 years and 700 lashes, he has been sentenced to 15 years and 1500 lashes, 70 a week, after making an appeal.

Family members, friends and colleagues gathered in outrage and grief outside the headquarters of Egypt's doctors union, calling upon King Abdullah to pardon Raouf. "1,500 lashes is unprecedented in the history of Islam," read one banner carried by protesters. "Who is responsible for the humiliation of our doctors abroad?" read another.

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) and the foreign minister are working hard to find a way to return Raouf home quickly. Hafez Abu Saeda, the director of EOHR, stated that the princess was prescribed the same medication that she was receiving in the United States, "so it is obvious that the doctor was not at fault for her addiction."

Abu Saeda was astonished that the judge doubled the sentence and the lashes after the appeal. It is tantamount, he said, to penalizing Amin for asserting his right of appeal. "When you appeal against a sentencing it is the rule that it cannot go higher, but in Saudi Arabia it appears anything is possible," said Saeda.

Protests in Egypt have driven the Egyptian foreign ministry to seek a solution, partly out of concern that negative repercussions may damage relations between Cairo and Riyadh.

A human rights lawyer said that he was given the first 70 lashes last week and he will get 70 more this week.

Corporal punishment is okay only if it is one or two to deter the person when incarceration and fining failed. Like they do it in Singapore: it is very difficult to keep criminals in a over crowded gaols. They gather organize and break out. There are criminals with repeat offences and they are not scared of the law at all, but to lash 100 times and all not going to be a deterrent but it would work as a trauma for rest of the life.

By taking away capital punishment, lashes may be a deterrent at the same time, in the absence of judicial killings, non- judicial killings are norm in Asia like police encounter etc., Killed in action, or cross-fire or attempt to flee while checking or in custody is justified murder nevertheless after several courts try and jury is also confirms clemency brazens criminals. Nobody talked about these things when Saddam Hussein was hanged. So, Islamic sharia is applicable as it suits your purpose. I don't justify any over look in justice or political nature or defend monarchy. Men of evil intents need severe punishments but the justice process should be not on arbitration though appeal procedures delay and drag on. Justice delayed is justice denied. There shouldn't be room for instant justice for security reasons or for national interests. Secret agents, intelligence agencies poisoning opponents/reporters on the ruling of the party in power. Suicide bombings warrant capital punishments be considered as not human right violations but an inevitable necessity.

i want you answer
Ok Saudi arabia is a country that is ruled by islamic law..Sharia.
no matter how bad this doctor is he shouldn't have gotten ``1500 whips..it is not in Islamic law.

how ever my friend, i feel sorry for this doctor,, but i really feel more sorry for the egyptians that go to egyptian Jails for nothing. and the old men the get tortured by young egyptian police officers..so we first have to stop the abuse in our country..egypt then we have to stop it in other countries.
So how do u expect the saudis to respect and take care of egyptians whe Egypt itself it not doing that to its own ppl..
Coco nuts..it wasnt the Saudi nation that applied this law..it was the courts Ruling..not the people...

Pete
obviously we don't live in the 21st century....

islamic law is predated to even before islam when people in the ancient world would stone women and whip men.......

islam i do not think is a peaceful religion.... especially not the way saudis practice....

saudis own the world haven't you heard... they own everything except the media..... the jews own that.

people of the middle east are living in anceint times.... look at dubai.... just recently an australian tourist was sentenced for three months for allegedly having relations with a women in plain view on the beach....... he himself said that it was bogus.. everything is available yet it is illegal?........... the country contradicts its self in every manner.

Noor M
I also agree with Pete.
I do not think it is justified to flog someone for prescribing something.
It is ridiculous - the patient had free will do take the medication- are you supposed to go and administer the medication personally?
Sorry - did not mean to go off on the Q. But I think it is unjust and very unprofessional and backward of the law to punish a physician like that.
