Medical Assistant... Mistake?

This fall I will be starting a medical assistant program at my community college. I have taken all the classes that were needed to enter into it but now im doubting this choice...
I've been doing a bit of reading about how much money a CMA could make and im wondering if there is any type of room for growth or advancement here?
If I were to become a medical assistant, what else could do with a CMA education later on down the line if im not satisfied with doing just that?
Will I have to start all over with another program or can I build on what I will learn?

a little help here...

I am currently in school to be a Medical Assistant.
I thought it was a great opportunity for a career but honestly, I don't believe it is.
If I had a choice now I would have went to be an LVN or RN.
There really isn't any room for advancement to me.

i personally believe that people are too afraid of doing too many years in college. silly, isn't it, to do say 1-2 years college and work for many years but not really getting anywhere when you can do at least 4 years of college and live life well and be able to retire 10 years sooner than you would with a 1-2 years education. Please don't be scared of doing too much college, you can never get enough college and i think you should consider finding something thats worth your time and effort.

best of luck

i say don't do it.My friend went to school 2 yrs for Medical Assist and got her Associate Degree and she only make 9.00 an hr. The same amount of time to be a medical assistant you can be a LPN.I also have a friend who went to school 2 yrs. for LPN and she makes 18.00 an hour. See the difference.

My understanding with being an CMA is that you will work in a doctors office and there really isn't much room for advancement. You'll have to start all over if you decide to go into nursing (although some of your skills will be helpful to you). I think you should try to get your RN!

A CMA is just a start. To advance, you'll need a combination of experience, training, and education. Depending on what interests you when you actually start working, you could move up to a nurse (if you go the medical route) or become a business/practice manager or some other administrative/managerial role in the medical field if you like the business/policy side of the industry.

I am a medical assistant and have had no formal education in that field. It is a common misconception that a medical assistant needs a degree or diploma from a specialized program. I received my certification by taking a test and submitting recommendations from the doctors I work for. I have worked in a medical office for 10 years. I am equally qualified as a person with a "degree" in medical assisting.
My advice to you - if you want to go to college - is to pursue a degree as an RN, you can work in a medical office while you are in school. I wouldn't spend time or money on a medical assistant program.
