I'm quoting another yahoo individual who answered a different question. It sounds very bipartisan to me:
I wish there were no health insurance companies. I wish we had a national health care system that wouldn't be run by government.
When I still had my job they withheld about $ 600 per month from my pay to cover health insurance. It would have been just as good to me if that $ 600 went to the national health care system to fund the Dr's and hospitals with all they need in order to provide medical care for everyone.
Insurance companies are in this for profit. Big pharma is in it for profit. Hospitals are in it for profit too. Dr's jack up their pay so that the can afford to pay for malpractice insurance because lawyers are allowed to sue Dr's without limits!
So I think the government should put an end to health care for profit and make it non profit. Negotiate with big pharma to provide drugs cheaper for our country, put limits on lawyers so the Dr's could agree to work for less, and instead of us paying insurance premiums to a middle man, just let that same amount of money go to the national health fund instead. I know it's just a fantasy. Everyone wants profits!

Republicans have now said they're opposed to private non-profit insurance co-ops, owned entirely by their customers.
The logic behind this position eludes me.

No, it sounds like socialized medicine and BTW most health insurance companies are non-profit entities. You also have to remember it would cost you more than $ 600/mo. to cover yourself and those contributing nothing..

who knows but I support the guy. I believe in socialized medicine as well, the best medical program that serves many other countries. ie france.
btw on this list we are 37th behind morocco and costa ricca. maybe that shows that our system is corrupt

I hear what you are saying but do you really want the government in charge of health care? When we make things for profit there is competition. If the government is in charge there is no reason to improve or give good customer service. If we don't have a choice we are left to suffer with what is given to us, however terrible. At least now we have freedom to choose doctors, health insurance plans or no plan if that is what we choose. With a government plan you get what you get. No choice, is never a good choice.

I live in Canada where everyone gets excellent care guaranteed.
But in the US, there is a deep-seated belief that market-competition for profit enhances efficiency. This may be true (as long as you don't mind companies profiting from your illness!). So I would say that banning the profit motive would remove competition and result in a less efficient and less competitive system. The problem is "competitive and efficient" for whom?
I like Obama's solution to let the companies compete but to place severe restrictions on what they can get away with in the pursuit of profit. The public option will fail if it is not the SOLE option like here in Canada and most of the free world, but it would appear that Americans philosophically are unwilling to consider socialized medicine. You'll continue to pay more for health care as a consequence, but perhaps your care will be more efficient and competitive. Frankly I doubt it because in the US insurance comes via your employer most of the time, which means that the person doing the "comparison shopping" isn't the one who gets the care it is the one who pays the bills. Think about that!

Why would someone spend a quarter of a million dollars on medical school, and stay in school until their early 30's, so they can get the low paying job of being a doctor in your non-profit health care system?
Why would a pharm company invest millions of dollars in researching a drug that treats cancer, or some other ailment or affliction, to be forced to give it away with no return on their investment?
Profit is what drives people to innovate, You are typing on a computer, probably in an air conditioned room. There's probably a tv running in the background, and you probably heated up your dinner in a microwave oven. Do you think all of those things would have been developed if not for profit? Before American capitalism came about, health care consisted of sawing off people's limbs and curing infections with leeches. Transportation was by horse and buggy. It was like that for thousands of years. It is American capitalism and the promise of profit that has brought us this far this fast.
