It is used when a person has difficulties breathing and the docs have to make a cut/hole somewhere in his/her throat to open the trachea -- if i am not mistaken -- and insert a tube there so that the person can breathe. PLEASE---if you can, provide me with a video of how it is done! Thanks a lot,ppl!

it is called a tracheotomy, and to maintain the "hole" a tracheostomy is inserted.
