My father is a truck driver in California. He was already on medical leave due to a back injury for about 4 weeks, on the 4th week he had a heart attack. The doctors told him he will have to be off for at least 3 months before he is able to go back to work. Legally what is the minimum and maximum time he can be on medical leave with out losing his medical coverage from work? What is the average minimum and Maximum for most employers? Can someone be fired while they are on disability?

Typically, in your father's case, his long term disability insurance would kick in.
Employers do not pull medical insurance as long as the employee is paying the premiums.
Yes, someone can be fired at anytime at all. California is an 'employment at will' state.

Unless the insurance was 100% employer funded, the employee is required to pay their share EVERY pay day, or the insurance lapses without the employer doing anything. There is no legal maximum. As long as the employer is willing to pay their portion of the premiums, and the employee pays their portion, the insurance can remain in effect until the insurance provider refuses to renew.

If your Dad is eligible for FMLA then he has 12 weeks of protected leave. When that ends the company can legally terminate him,but many will not if he will be back within a short time. Even if they terminate himthey have to offer him COBRA so he can continue his insurance.
