I just went in to the ER last month to TRY to stop a miscarriage (didn't work). All they did was some quick bloodwork, and I talked to a Doctor for about 5 minutes.
Now, we're in tricare, (military) so I didn't have to pay, but since they made a mistake in the claim, and tricare sic'd me on them to resubmit it. So... I got to see the bill. They charged $ 759
I was SHOCKED. I asked a question earlier WHY this costs so much. One said that it was because of malpractice lawsuit insurance, and another said it's because the government doesn't pay attention to details or shop around, and if they're charged that much, they'll just pay up with no contest like other insurance companies, so many of these hospitals are charging WAY over what something is worth.
I kind of think that it might be a mixture of both, but what would happen if everyone had government insurance?
It might make it more difficult to sue because, it's hard to win when you're suing the government, so... maybe the whole malpractice insurance problem would go down. But, we've learned from history that where there is no competition, there is no quality. Not to mention, taxpayers as a whole are footing the bill through the govrernment, so the hospitals would have little motivation NOT to charge the maximum allowable on every service rendered, as they did with me?!
I just don't see how this would work on a large scale, Tricare's probably enough of a drain on the taxpayers.
I shudder what to think of what everyone had to pay for me to go to the doctor for my sinus infection (which I probably could have ridden out at home, but wanted a quick fix) last year??!! Not to mention the millions of other military personnel that go in for a little sniffle just because they can?!
If you're enlightened and understand how exactly federal government mandated insurance or healthcare could actually work in the real world, please let me know. I'd like to read your opinions.
Thanks!
Yes, I understand how several countries have it and our doing fine. How is their national debt looking though? is it growing? Is their currency inflating at astounding rates? If I had my guess, I'd imagine that's what would happen here in a similar scenario, but I guess only time will tell.
Not to mention, yes, healthcare in the USA is out of control, but is the answer really for the government to take it over? Why don't they try to stop many of the crazy malpractice lawsuits, while yes, they're sad, they ask for THOUSANDS of dollars in damages for things like "emotional distress" etc...
Why can't the doctor just take the hit if he's malpractice d? That's his fault, not the hospital's necessarily.
I dunno, Universal insurance sounds disastrous.

Canada and UK have it and they are doing just fine. I got a bill last month for ONE cat scan of my abdomen. Im 26 years old. The bill was for $ 6,900.00. Yes thats right, close to 7 grand, for a ct scan.

Like you i dont know if it would be better or worse, but ask the Canadians how they like it, from what i have read from some , it is a mess and not much better than the mess we already have, i have heard you have a big waiting time to see doctors, My husband is a vet and it took him a year just to get an appointment, here in the US and i guess from what i read it isn't getting much better, i also read last night that a lot of people are no longer going into private practice as they don't think they are making enough as it is. That it is better to specialize because that is where the big money is, can you believe that. I guess we all just have to stop going to the doctors for every little thing and start taking better care of ourselves.
BOBO
..."THINK" will happen? I KNOW what will happen!!! Lets see now...
(1) Government = beaurocracy.
(2) Beaurocracy = personnel
(3) Personnel = salaries, perks & overhead.
(4) Salaries, perks & overhead = TAXES.
(5) Taxes = red tape, lower standard of living & individual retrictions.
(6) Red tape, lower standard of living & individual restrictions = where America is at present & "gettin" worse folks, getting worse!!!
